California Contractor License

With just some exceptions, all businesses or individuals who wants to work on any building, highway, parking facility, road, excavation, railroad, or other structure in California must get a license from the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) if the total project cost of the contract is $500 or more.

California is a state with a busy construction industry. Naturally, many contractors are willing to set up their business or practice. But before they can do that, they must get a California contractor license.

There are three different types of California contractor license issued by the board to a person, a partnership, corporation, or joint venture. These are: Class A for general engineering contractors, Class B for general building contractors and Class C for specialty contractors.

Your application requirements will depend on the type of California contractor license you applied for. But the basic requirements for any California contractor license are:

* A verification of at least four years of experience as a journeyman, foreman, owner-builder, contractor, or supervising employee. You can also apply for a California contractor license with one and one-half to three years of approved education and/or apprenticeship to this requirement.

* Unless you're applying for a joint venture license, you should have $2,500 above worth of operating capital to apply for a new California contractor license.

The California contractor license test may be hard but if you study well you can pass it with ease. Among the study cheats you can use is the materials given out by the California Contractors State License Board. You can also opt to enroll at a contractor license review school to increase and brush up your knowledge.

The California contractor license exam overview:

The exam is conducted as a closed book test and has two parts. The first part has 100 multiple-choice questions on the law and business in California. This California contractor license exam tackles business practices, bid preparation, contracts, contract operations, safety, labor and legal topics.

The second part is about the specific trade you applied for. The Contractors State License Board provides a study guide for applicants. It covers the topics on the exam, its weight of each topic, and other materials relevant to your trade and which may be asked in the exam.

Tips on taking the California contractor license examination

* Make sure that you arrive at least five minutes before the exam.

* Bring all the important items such as a pen and the California contractor license exam permit.

* Be sure to answer as many items on the questionnaire as you can. The California contractor license test has a time limit.

* Skip the hard questions and go straight to the easy ones. You can go back to them when you have enough time. This way you'll be able to cover more items and increase your chance of getting a higher score.

* If you finish early, do not be an eager beaver by submitting your papers. Take the extra time to look over your answers for any revisions and additional answers.

Once you've passed the test, getting your California contractor license and keeping it is the key. Keeping it means that you have to maintain a good rating from the Board so that your business will not be blacklisted or get any complaints from your clients.
