Contractor License Application

So you're thinking of getting your contractor license application? Are you sure you are ready for it? Here are a number of things to consider before making that decision of getting a contractor license application.

Five questions that you should answer before considering a contractor license application:

1. Are you experienced enough?

The requirements for experience in the trade you are in may differ from one state to another. To be qualified for a contractor license application, you must have at least four years of experience in the last ten years as a foreman, journeyman, supervising employee, owner-builder or contractor.

You may also get a contractor license application if you have one and one-half to three years of approved education and/or apprenticeship in your chosen trade.

2. Do you have the skills necessary to do the job?

Having the experience is one part of it but knowing the trade and how to is a major part of getting your contractor license application. You will be asked verify your skills with certificates from your employer or school. Although you will not be asked to perform anything to prove your skills, knowledge is important since you will be tested about it on your exam.

3. Do you have enough money for fees and capital?

Getting a license may not be too expensive but expect to pay a few dollars for it. Make sure that you have enough operating capital as required by the state especially if you will be getting your contractor license application as a partnership or corporation.

4. Will you be getting your license alone or with partners?

The Board issues a contractor license application to an individual, partnership, joint venture or corporation. It depends whether you have plans on opening your own business or would like to have partners. You also have to consider what type of contractor license will you be applying for.

There are three classes of contractor license: Class A — General Engineering Contractor, Class B — General Building Contractor, and Class C — Specialty Contractor. The latter has subcategories that the applicant has to specify if his trade does not fall under the first two classes of contractor license application.

5. Should you get your contractor license application legally or not?

The question whether you should get your contractor license application legally or not is not debatable. The only way you will be able to practice being a contractor is through legal means. It may be inconvenient but at least you are safe from inspectors and you are free to do your business with no worries.

Once you've made up your mind, the contractor license application process is fairly simple. You can get your contractor license application form from the state board office or download from their website. Just complete the required documents and take the Business and Law Board Exam. You will need to pass the exam to get your license. After that, the rest flow smoothly. A license is good for two years only, and then you have to renew it.

After the first contractor license, you can still apply for other licenses on a different trade. However, you will have to redo the entire contractor license application process. The application fee will be smaller though since you have already passed your first license.

Submitting your contractor license application is only the start but it's a good way to get on the right track to setting up your own contractor business in the future.
